UNCOMMON CHARACTER IN A DEGENERATE SOCIETY: VESTIGE OF HOPE FOR A FAILED NATION

Time and again we have seen individuals, companies and even civil societies give awards and accolades to very corrupt members of the Nigerian political class, past leaders who have milked dry the breasts of our country for their selfish benefits, and high ranking members of the public service who have done nothing but collect unearned salaries and contribute to the decay in the civil service.

In fact Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and Sani Abacha have been given awards by not only civil society groups but also former Nigerian Presidents. We praise Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, James Ibori, Chimaroke Nnamani, Dimeji Bankole, Bode George, Joshua Dariye, Murtala Nyako, Orji Uzor Kalu, Lucky Igbindedion, and even Bukola Saraki for their “selfless service”, “exceptional leadership styles” and “integrity in service”. Our people are mad!!! They can only be mad, or perhaps I am the mad one. On a second thought we are certainly all mad!!!  If not, how do we explain these? What explanations can we possibly proffer to posterity for these paradoxes, this captor-bonding? Something is definitely wrong with the people-the sovereign.

The society is so dysfunctional that one has on many occasions wondered if there’s hope for this country. However, once in a while we come across persons whose lifestyles cannot but give one hope for a better tomorrow. Mrs Ebele Olisakwe is without any doubt one of those persons.

As the Assistant Chief Registrar (ACR) of the High Court, Ekwulobia, Anambra State, she functions in a system which is arguably the second most corrupt system in Nigeria-the judiciary that is. Only the Nigeria Police tops the Judiciary on the most recent Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) corruption index in Nigeria. Any person familiar with the judicial process in Nigeria, knows without any incertitude that the very high level of extortion and unprofessionalism by judicial officers while collecting monies for filing processes, charging fees for service of Court processes and preparation of certified true copies for parties cannot be overstated. It is in this light that Mrs Ebele stands out. Any legal practitioner or individual who has had the pleasure of filing any Court process at the High Court, Ekwulobia, knows that there is a significant difference in what is ordinarily obtainable in Nigerian Courts.

We must as a people go beyond the madness of giving awards to undeserving persons in our society only because they are wealthy and we expect favours from them, or perhaps because we want to prompt them to do their statutory functions. We must appreciate persons with integrity who are diligent in service no matter how low the offices they occupy may seem. That is the way we build a nation, and teach our children that selfless and diligent service no matter where one finds oneself is dignified and highly esteemed.

It is for these reasons that Amicus Centre for Justice has found Mrs Ebele S. Olisakwe very worthy to be presented its Meritorious Award for her exceptional leadership style, character, discipline and integrity in public service on 10/11/2017.

She was presented the Award by the President of Amicus Centre for Justice, Barr. Akachukwu Johnmary Maduakolam and other Executives of the Centre.
