EASTERN NIGERIA: EXTRACTS FROM THE WILLINKS COMMISSION REPORT OF 1958.

An appraisal is needed. 1. “More than 98% of people who inhabit this area (the ‘Igbo Plateau’ of the Eastern region) are Igbo and speak one language, though of course with certain differences of dialect. They are no more popular with their neighbours than is usual in the case of an energetic and expanding people whose neighbours have a more leisurely outlook on life.” 2. “Though there has been no great kingdom or indigenous culture in the Eastern Region, the coastal chiefs grew on their trade with the (European merchant) ships and they adopted customs, clothing and housing more advanced than those of the peoples of the interior on whom they had at first preyed for slaves. It was Christine Szymanski that said and I quote :   "Negative people exist on reactions from others ,it is their fuel to survive. Do not give into the temptation to respond. It is not your responsibility to keep their tank full and yours empty".  But Edmund Burke also said that : "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"  *The time has come for the well meaning people of Anambra  to call the wife of the Governor to order INCLUDING the two fellas of Nnewi extraction that she appointed SAs, who are being used to bring disrepute to Ndi Nnewi, by dragging their traditional institution to the mud, (at the appropriate time, they must face the consequence of their actions.)* Today, from writing all manner of lies on a daily basis against the Distinguished Senator from Nnewi, (infantile write ups that people have continued to ignore). The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is proposing to collect excise duty on soft drinks, abolished in 1993 by the interim national government. Appearing before a joint committee of the senate on finance and national planning on Thursday, Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the NCS, said the federal government should lift the tax waivers for companies producing soft drinks within the country. Ali argued that if companies producing alcoholic beverages and tobacco could pay taxes, those producing soft drinks could do the same. “We have been pushing for the expansion of our own excise collection. During the (Ernest) Shonekan regime (in 1993), excise was stopped for carbonated drinks manufacturers, like Coca-Cola,” the retired colonel said. “The only one approved for us are tobacco alcoholic beverages. The understanding then was that tobacco and alcoholic beverages affect the health of citizens and should be taxed. “But we know that carbonated drinks are also injurious to the health of the peop
