The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Owerri zone, has urged the federal government to expedite action to deploy the University Transparency, Accountability Solution, UTAS, over the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, to resolve the issue of irregularity of salary payments among university staff. Speaking at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia state, the zonal coordinator, ASUU, Owerri Zone, Comr Uzo Onyebinama, explained that ASUU is unveiling the UTAS as a credible alternative to IPPIS, since IPPIS has failed to address major issues that border around personnel information and payroll system. Police in Lagos have arrested five suspects who specialised in stealing mobile phones to withdraw money from owners’ accounts. The suspects are Daniel Asigbe, 25; Ikechukwu Aigbe, 25; Frank Opara, 21; Seun Dairo, 19; and Goodness Ndukwe, 19. They had stolen a Samsung X9 phone in a barbing saloon, in Lekki, two months ago, from where they successfully withdrew N2.3 million. The suspects said that they did not need an insider connection in banks to transfer money from stolen SIM cards. They claimed they had codes that could facilitate the change of owners withdrawal pins. During interrogation, one of them, Asigbe, said: “I stole the phone and gave the SIM card to Ikechukwu, who got the owner’s BVN. He sent the BVN number to Yele [at large], who generated the account owner’s transfer pin. “He gave Ikechukwu the details. Malam Mamman Daura, the nephew to President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, placed a call to President Muhammad Buhari, from his hospital abode in the United Kingdom. This is contained in a video which made headlines posted on Elombah TV on Saturday. Malam Daura, during the phone call, assured President Buhari that he is sound, hale and hearty. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is proposing to collect excise duty on soft drinks, abolished in 1993 by the interim national government. Appearing before a joint committee of the senate on finance and national planning on Thursday, Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the NCS, said the federal government should lift the tax waivers for companies producing soft drinks within the country. Ali argued that if companies producing alcoholic beverages and tobacco could pay taxes, those producing soft drinks could do the same. “We have been pushing for the expansion of our own excise collection. During the (Ernest) Shonekan regime (in 1993), excise was stopped for carbonated drinks manufacturers, like Coca-Cola,” the retired colonel said. “The only one approved for us are tobacco alcoholic beverages. The Minister of Aviation, Mr. Hadi Sirika has announced that  resumption of international flights will start from the 29th of August, 2020. Mr. Sirika made this known through his Twitter handle on Monday. According to the Aviation Minister, the resumption will begin with Lagos and Abuja. He said that protocols and procedures will be announced in due course before takeover.  Recall, International flights have been suspended over fears of spread of Corona Virus since March of this year.
