Following the findings of the investigation by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has restricted its licensed agents’ access to the National Identification Number (NIN) database. Recall that a report by FIJ had alleged that expressverify.com, a private website, has unrestricted access to the NINs and personal details of every registered Nigerian. It added that, the website has monetised the recovery of NINs and personal information on the Nigerian identification database. The NDPC, which is investigating the incidence of data breach at NIMC, averred that, the ongoing investigation has revealed that a third party which, among others, was originally authorised to provide verification services to citizens and genuine businesses might have allowed expressverify.com to use its NIN verification credentials to conduct verification. South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma has been involved in a car crash overnight after a vehicle transporting him was hit by a drunk driver, police said on Friday. Zuma, however, escaped from the accident unhurt. The car crash happened just hours after electoral officials barred Zuma from standing in the May 29 general election, further stoking tensions in the run-up to the polls. The driver’s car “collided with former president Mr Jacob Zuma’s official armoured state vehicle”, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said. The 51-year-old man was arrested in KwaZulu Natal province “for drunken driving, as well as on a charge of reckless and negligent driving”, SAPS said. Zuma and his bodyguards escaped uninjured and the 81-year-old was taken to his place of residence. Last week at the Federal High Court of Nigeria in the Awka Judicial Division holden at Awka, Anambra State, the duo of Chinonso Chinaemelu, 27-year-old and Okoye Chisom Christian, 20-year-old were sentenced to one year imprisonment respectively for vandalizing a distribution substation belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC). This development was made known by the Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh in a statement on Thursday. According to Ezeh, they were arrested on the 29th of November 2023 by Abatete local vigilante group while attempting to vandalize the distribution substation within the locality.
