The Watchdog's Dilemma: Serving The Public Interest Or Personal Gain

By Kamen Chuks Ogbonna

Media Influencers are critical watchdogs of society.

But the question is...

As the moral barometer and compass of society, do your actions depend on who pays the piper, or do they prioritize societal good?

In Anambra, all indices point toward a collective effort, championed by the Governor, to create a just and equitable society based on the philosophy of One State, One People, and One Agenda.

It is an all-encompassing effort to ensure no one is left behind.

It is comprehensive, addressing nearly every sphere of societal need.

Over the past three years, Charly Nwa Mgbafor has made a deliberate impact on education by declaring it free, employing Solution Teachers, and equipping them with necessary tools like laptops. Bursary payment for our undergraduates is also in the pipeline.

In the health sector, he has built many hospitals and equipped them with modern facilities, strengthened the existing ones with modern equipment, declared free deliveries for pregnant women without discrimination, and included free antenatal services and cesarean sections.

For road infrastructure, he has extended roads to remote parts of the state that have never enjoyed tarred roads, expanded existing roads to align with the original master plan, and undertaken projects so expansive and extensive that by the end of next year, it will be difficult to find a major trunk road in Anambra that is not smooth and sweet to ply, in addition to locally built community roads.

He has also constructed modern flyovers to aid interconnectivity and free flow of traffic and vehicular movement.

To put it succinctly, what can best be described as an infrastructural revolution is taking place in the state with numerous completed and ongoing projects. From breaking the 34-year jinx by providing Ndi Anambra with a befitting Government House to initiatives like the Okpoko urban renewal, Ochanja, Oba drug market, Solution Fun City, Awka Smart Cities, Silicon Valley, and Onitsha 2.0, etc.

For youth empowerment, programs like the successful One Youth-Two Skills initiative and the Digital Hub initiative have either been introduced or coming up. Including several laudable initiatives like the provision of the needed framework and government backing for the Igba-Boi Igbo apprenticeship system and several others.

There are in place audacious plans for rail transportation, gas exploration, return of pipe-borne water to the taps in our homes, free internet accessibility in our localities, erosion control, and reclamation of our lands...the list continues.

On security, the Governor has provided the hitherto elusive solution to the insecurity in the southeast by going after the fake Dibias and Ezenwanyis. His clever act of putting in place a community-chained vigilante security system with a central command and control center in the state capital has yielded marvelous results.

The solution Governor fused both traditional and technology-based initiatives to accomplish an almost crime-free environment for the state.

To add pudding to the very tasty cake on display, the Idea Bearer is taking the fight to the moral decay bedeviling our society by the institution of deliberate policies geared towards the rebirth of the core societal values and principles we held dear in the past as Ndi Igbo.

That Anambra is on the rise under the stewardship of the Solution Governor is crystal clear, even to the blind.

That is the reason why genuine politicians with love for Anambra didn't bother to pick forms to contest this year's governorship election.

The question then becomes:

As watchdogs of society, should we align with these visible efforts to ensure their continuity or pursue personal interests by seeking to profit from unscrupulous politicians who do not mean well for the state?
