Nsukka Local Government Area on Wednesday last week rolled out high-powered motorbikes to neighborhood watch officials, prioritizing border communities grappling with security flashpoints.
Over 200 neighborhood watch officials were present for the distribution exercise, including 36 Community Security Officers (CSOs) drawn from 56 communities across the 20 wards in Nsukka LGA.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the Area Commander also made early appearances in support of the initiative before departing due to other pressing operational matters.
Addressing attendees, the Council Chairman, Hon. Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, KSJI, explained that the initial phase of the distribution prioritizes border communities due to their heightened vulnerability.
The first batch of beneficiaries includes Anụka, Agụ Ama-Agụ, Agụ-Opi, Eha Ndị Agụ, and Agụ-Obimo, which shares a boundary with Ụzọ-Uwani. The Chairman added that the next phase will extend to additional communities, namely Agụ Adada Lejja, Agụ Ụmabọ, Okutu, Ụtọbọlọ, and Ibagwa Agụ.
Speaking before the distribution to the joint assembly of Neighborhood Watch, Anti-Cult, and Anti-Drug Units, the Nsukka LG Diaspora Desk Officer, Rev. Mike Maduabuchi Ugwu, said the donation of the power bikes by members of the Nsukka Diaspora Community was driven by genuine concern for the safety and protection of communities and people.
Rev. Ugwu used the occasion to appreciate members of the Nsukka Diaspora Community who always have the well-being of their people at heart.
“Secondly, it is to support the security architecture already established by the administration of Hon. Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, KSJI,” Rev. Ugwu stated.
He noted that the motorcycles, alongside a DJI MAVIC 4 PRO Surveillance Technology Drone, are expected to enhance mobility, improve rapid response, and bolster surveillance efforts. “It’s a commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Nsukka LGA,” he said.
Rev. Ugwu described the collaboration as the first of many foreign investment and developmental projects planned by the Nsukka Diaspora Community, which will also focus on employment and youth empowerment.
He emphasized the need for stricter monitoring of movements at all entry and exit points in border communities, listing Opi-Agu, Eha-Ndiagu, Anuka, Agu-Edem, and Agu-Obimo as beneficiary communities in this first phase, noting they have previously recorded varying levels of security challenges.
Rev. Ugwu further assured the LGA Council Chairman and security operatives that the Nsukka Local Government Diaspora Desk (NSLGDD) is mobilizing for the second phase of support. “More importantly, we will be closely watching and observing how effectively this equipment is deployed and the results of their activities within the LGA,” he added.
The distribution follows the formal presentation and handover of security apparatus to the Nsukka LGA Chairman, which took place earlier this year on January 11, 2026, at Adada House, Nsukka.
