As political realignments begin ahead of the 2027 general elections, stakeholders across Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo are increasingly engaging in conversations around equity, political balance, and strategic representation within the Nnewi Federal Constituency.
At the center of this growing debate is a compelling argument that the 2027 House of Representatives seat should naturally return to Nnewi North, not merely as a matter of sentiment, but as a deliberate political calculation capable of preserving fairness, and improving electoral chances for any serious political platform seeking victory.
The conversation has become more significant considering the current political realities within the constituency. The present Senator representing the zone under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is from Nnewi South and is expected to complete the tenure of the late Ifeanyi Ubah through 2027. At the same time, strong political indicators suggest that Chief. Ebuka Onunkwo from Ekwusigo may emerge at the Senate in 2027 owing to his growing popularity, political reach, and strategic grassroots influence.
Should that happen, many observers believe it would create an obvious imbalance for Ekwusigo to simultaneously retain the Green Chambers seat through the current House of Representatives member, Hon. Peter Uzokwe, who is also from Ekwusigo.
Political analysts within the constituency argue that zoning, though unofficial in many cases, remains one of the strongest instruments for maintaining political harmony and ensuring every component of a constituency feels represented. For this reason, many believe that the House of Representatives should strategically shift to Nnewi North in 2027.
Beyond the moral argument of fairness lies an even deeper political reality. There are growing concerns that any political party, particularly the Nigeria Democratic Congress, risks handing opposition parties a major campaign advantage if it ignores the zoning sentiments currently gaining traction among the electorate, because of the obvious voting strength in Nnewi North which can't be waved, as the local government remains a determining factor in who emerges victorious in the zone.
Within political circles, many fear that presenting another candidate from Ekwusigo for the Green Chambers may alienate critical voting blocs in Nnewi North at a time when opposition parties could capitalize on the situation by fielding a strong Nnewi North candidate. Such a development could significantly reshape voter behavior and produce far-reaching electoral consequences.
Increasingly, one name continues to dominate discussions around competence, acceptability, youth appeal, and electability, tbat is Amb Ikebunwa Lotanna.
Across markets, campuses, business communities, youth gatherings, and political meetings within the constituency, Amb. Ikebunwa Lotanna is gradually emerging as one of the most marketable political figures from Nnewi North. Supporters describe him as a candidate whose profile transcends ordinary political ambition, arguing that he represents a new generation of educated, exposed, and development-oriented leaders.
What distinguishes him in the eyes of many supporters is not merely political popularity, but an unusual combination of academic excellence, entrepreneurial success, and grassroots connection.
From his early academic years, Lotanna reportedly distinguished himself through outstanding academic performances. At the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Ufuma Campus, he earned recognition as the first student to reportedly clear all courses in his pre-science programme with distinctions, emerging overall best, a feat supporters say remains unmatched.
He later pursued a Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, eventually becoming a lecturer within the same discipline, an achievement many consider evidence of both intellectual capacity and technical competence.
Beyond academia, his professional development spans several international certifications, including Microsoft certification, Google Digital Marketing certification, Cisco networking certification obtained in Dubai, cybersecurity training in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, and further studies at the UNIZIK Business School.
Supporters also point to his legislative experience as a major advantage. Having served as a Senior Legislative Aide in the State House of Assembly, they argue that he possesses firsthand understanding of legislative procedures, constituency project negotiations, budget scrutiny, and policy engagement, experiences considered essential for effective representation at the Green Chambers.
Outside politics, Lotanna has built a reputation in entrepreneurship through his involvement in the real estate sector as Chief Executive Officer of Palms Limited, creating employment opportunities and empowering young people across different sectors.
To many young voters within the constituency, his story resonates strongly because it reflects personal struggle, resilience, self-development, and achievement through merit rather than political inheritance.
His supporters further argue that the 2027 election should not merely be about political calculations or patronage networks, but about presenting a candidate capable of competing strongly across the entire federal constituency while also projecting competence at the national level.
Within this context, they insist that the demand for Nnewi North to produce the next House of Representatives member is not an attempt to exclude any part of the constituency, but rather a strategic effort to sustain political inclusiveness, reduce avoidable tensions, and position the constituency for stronger representation.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, one reality appears increasingly clear: the debate over equity, electability, and strategic balance within Nnewi Federal Constituency will remain central to the political calculations of parties and stakeholders alike.
For many supporters of Amb. Ikebunwa Lotanna, the moment represents more than another election cycle.
