From Seed Money to National Vision: How Lotanna Ikebunwa’s Political Journey Mirrors Peter Obi’s Philosophy of Empowerment

In Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape where promises are often louder than performance, the story of Amb. Lotanna Ikebunwa stands out as a rare testimony of vision, consistency, and transformational leadership born from little beginnings.

It is a story that traces a remarkable link between the former presidential candidate of the Labour party and today the frontline presidential aspirant under the platform of Nigeria Democratic Congress, the NDC.  

Peter Obi, and one of the rising political voices in Anambra State, Amb. Lotanna Ikebunwa, a young entrepreneur, youth developer, and Federal House of Representatives hopeful for Nnewi Federal Constituency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, is interesting to read, as it shows a semblance where destiny meet both great personalities. 

For many political observers, the connection between Mr. Peter Obi and Amb Lotanna Ikebunwa is no coincidence. It is the unfolding of a destiny shaped by opportunity, prudence, and uncommon commitment to youth development.


In 2011, during the administration of Peter Obi as Governor of Anambra State, the state government keyed into the Federal Government’s youth empowerment and job creation initiative aimed at reducing unemployment and crime across Nigeria. At the time, the then-President, Goodluck Jonathan, had encouraged all states and the Federal Capital Territory to align with the Federal Government’s YOUWIN programme, which was designed to empower young entrepreneurs with grants and startup support.

During the Phase II Awards Ceremony and flag-off of Phase III of the Anambra Youth Re-orientation and Empowerment Programme (ANSYREP) in Awka, over N100 million was distributed to about 1,500 youths trained in different vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

Among the beneficiaries was a determined young Lotanna Ikebunwa. While many saw the empowerment fund as a temporary relief, Lotanna saw it as destiny knocking on his door to do exploits. 

In a recent interview granted Amb Lotanna Ikebunwa, he said, " Peter Obi as the governor of Anambra state in 2011 gave me a seed grant of ₦100,000 to establish an IT-driven business. It was a modest amount by every standard, but what distinguished me then was not the size of the money but rather the size of his vision."

That singular opportunity would later birth Green Hibiscus Technology Ltd, a thriving digital technology company established officially in 2015 and still functioning successfully till date. Today, Green Hibiscus Technology Ltd, has evolved into a respected digital solutions company providing website hosting, domain registration, web design, server configuration, cybersecurity services, SSL integration, site lock configuration, CodeGuard services, and website optimization for visibility.

But beyond building a successful technology brand, Lotanna Ikebunwa chose the harder path, which is lifting others while climbing. In a country battling alarming youth unemployment, Ikebunwa has reportedly trained over 1,000 young Nigerians in digital and technology skills free of charge, equipping them with employable and entrepreneurial capacities in an increasingly digital world, little wonder many youths across Anambra State, even beyond his constituency wants him to represent the vigour he brings to every project. 
For many of those youths, the training became their first pathway to financial independence and self-reliance.

Political analysts say this singular achievement places Lotanna among the new generation of leaders who understand that empowerment is not about sharing rice during elections but about creating systems that help people succeed permanently, thus creating independence. 


Across Nnewi Federal Constituency, conversations about Amb. Lotanna Ikebunwa is no longer limited to politics. His story resonates deeply among young people because it reflects resilience, innovation, and the possibility of growth despite limited resources.

Supporters argue that if a young man could transform ₦100,000 into a functioning technology company that has impacted over 1,000 youths, then greater public resources placed under his supervision could yield even more significant results for Nnewi Federal constituency and Nigeria as well. 

Many see in him the same prudent management philosophy associated with Peter Obi's accountability, investment in human capital, and measurable impact. For a fact, the symbolic connection is difficult to ignore.

Peter Obi empowered Lotanna Ikebunwa with seed capital in 2011, fifteen years later, Lotanna is seeking to empower an entire constituency with ideas, innovation, and people-oriented representation.

Nigeria’s political environment has long been criticized for recycling leaders with little evidence of personal enterprise or community impact before seeking office. However, advocates of Ikebunwa insist his trajectory offers a refreshing contrast.

Before politics, he built. Before campaigns, he empowered. Before asking for public trust, he created opportunities for others.

That, many believe, is the strongest argument for why the Nigeria Democratic Congress should seriously consider giving him the party’s ticket to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Nnewi Federal Constituency

Party stakeholders and youth groups have increasingly pointed to his dexterity, technological exposure, grassroots appeal, and passion for development as qualities needed in modern legislative representation.

At a time when Nigeria urgently needs leaders capable of converting small opportunities into sustainable growth, the story of Amb. Lotanna Ikebunwa offers a compelling national lesson.

It is the story of what happens when empowerment meets vision. It is the story of how one act of faith by Peter Obi produced a ripple effect now touching hundreds of young lives.

And perhaps most importantly, it is the story of a young Nigerian who refused to waste an opportunity and now seeks a greater platform to serve.

For many youths in Anambra and Nnewi Federal constituency, which he is contesting for under the platform of Nigeria Democratic Congress, Lotanna Ikebunwa is no longer just another aspirant. He is becoming a symbol of possibility. The possibility that the future we all look for, is here with us.
