Ahead of Anambra governorship election slated for November 8, 2025, Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Dr George Moghalu, has flagged off its campaign with the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi; Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh; and Senator representing Anambra North, Tony Nwoye, leading the campaign train.
The flag-off rally held at All Saints Cathedral Church field, Onitsha, was also attended by members of national and state assemblies under the Labour Party platform; including Prof. Oby Orogbu (Awka North/South); Uchenna Okonkwo (Idemili North/South); Emeka Iduu (Onitsha North /South); George Ozodinobi (Njikoka/Dunukofia); Afam Ogene (Ogbaru); among other lawmakers.
Thousands of support groups, LP local government and ward executive members, and thousands of other supporters attended the rally.
Speaking during the flag-off rally, Peter Obi praised Anambra people for their love and support for LP and its candidate, George Moghalu, which made them turn out in their thousands to support him.
Obi used the occasion to clarify the insinuation that he has abandoned LP and its candidate, George Moghalu, and defected fully to African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi said he is part of the coalition that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for 2027 general election, yet, he remains in Labour Party until 2027, when they will utilize the coalition platform for presidential election.
"Though I'm part of the coalition, yet, I remain in the Labour Party. This is why I'm here to campaign for LP and its candidate, George Moghalu. We're here today to flag-off campaign for our governorship candidate," he said.
Obi also urged his audience to go back to their various localities to rally support for LP and its candidate ahead of the November election.
He said, "The candidature of George Moghalu is the best thing that has happened to Anambra State. Anambra must not miss this opportunity. Moghalu and his running mate is the best team. They have all it takes to take Anambra to the promised land.
"I did well as governor of Anambra State; Moghalu will do better. They said my only achievement in Anambra is that I built Sabmila brewery. But then, the brewery employs thousands of people in Anambra. It is also the highest tax payer in the state."
Speaking, the Senator representing Anambra North district, Dr. Tony Nwoye, expressed his readiness to support LP and its candidate, George Moghalu in touring every local government area during his campaigns.
Also, the Senator representing Anambra Central, Chief Victor Umeh, described Moghalu as good, sincere and incorruptible personality, who cannot be bought with money.
According to him, LP is very lucky to have a candidate and running that can win governorship election and deliver quality democracy dividends. He also described Moghalu's running mate, Mrs Okaro, as an experienced technocratic, who will bring her experience to bear in the governance of the state.
He advised Moghalu not to engage in campaign of bitterness, but to focus on issues of development, which is what Anambra people need at the moment.
Speaking on behalf of members of the House of Representatives, Hon. Uchenna Annie Okonkwo promised that members of the national assembly will support Moghalu, and ensure his victory come November 8 this year.
Governorship candidate of the party, Chief Dr George Moghalu, thanked Peter Obi, members of the national and state assemblies and LP supporters for turning out in their thousands for the campaign flag-off.
While reiterating his determination and that of his running mate, Mrs Okaro to reposition Anambra, and place it to the path of prosperity if elected, Moghalu said that he and his running mate have presented themselves for the will of God to prevail.
Earlier, state chairman of the party, Hon. Ugochukwu Emeh, represented by deputy chairman of the party, Ven. Christian Ohajekwe, averred that LP will win governorship election and deliver quality democracy dividends in Anambra.
"Our governorship candidate is tested and trusted character that is capable of winning this election for our party. All that is needed is for all of us to give our supports to achieve our aim," he said.
In his remarks, Chief Dr. George Moghalu expressed gratitude to the party leadership and supporters for their massive turnout. He reaffirmed his commitment to transformational leadership and a prosperous Anambra, pledging to govern with transparency, competence, and compassion if elected.
“We have presented ourselves for the will of the people and of God,” Moghalu said. “My running mate and I are determined to reposition Anambra and set it on the path to sustainable development.”
The rally also featured remarks from the state party leadership. Representing the Anambra LP Chairman, Hon. Ugochukwu Emeh, Deputy Chairman Ven. Christian Ohajekwe declared the party’s confidence in victory.
“Our candidate is a proven leader who will deliver dividends of democracy to the people. With collective effort and unity, we will win,” he said.
With the flag-off concluded, the Labour Party is expected to begin a state-wide campaign tour ahead of what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested election.
