2026 Budget: Governor Mbah Setting National Standard, Deserves Emulation — Ohanaeze Youths

Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Mbah, has been commended by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide for his landmark commitment to education in the newly presented 2026 budget.

Governor Mbah on Tuesday submitted a historic ₦1.62 trillion budget proposal to the Enugu State House of Assembly. Titled “Budget of Renewed Momentum,” the proposal allocates ₦1.296 trillion (80%) to capital expenditure and ₦321.3 billion (20%) to recurrent spending, bringing the total to ₦1,617,397,465,000.

A breakdown of the social sector shows that education received the largest share—32.27%—the highest allocation in the state’s history.

Reacting to the development shortly after the presentation, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, praised Governor Mbah for his visionary leadership and urged other South-East governors to follow suit.

He described the governor’s consistent prioritization of education since assuming office as a firm indication of his resolve to overhaul and modernise the sector.

“We are particularly impressed by the governor’s performance with the 2024 budget, which recorded over 80 percent implementation and has delivered visible impact across the state,” Okwu said. “Governor Mbah remains a leading light not only in Igboland but in the entire country. We urge other South-East governors to wake up.”

The youth leader emphasized that the organisation was pleased with the significant attention given to education, noting that it remains the cornerstone of sustainable development.

“Any government serious about societal transformation must invest heavily in education. Governor Mbah is doing exactly that—far beyond the UNESCO benchmark,” he added.

Okwu expressed optimism that the over ₦1 trillion earmarked for capital projects would fast-track development across Enugu State. He further called for diligent implementation of the 2026 fiscal plan, just as was achieved in the preceding year.

“Governor Mbah came prepared, and he is demonstrating the capacity and clarity required to redefine governance in Enugu State. We are challenging other governors across the South-East to rise to the occasion and deliver real governance to their people,” he stated.
