Anambra State bets on tourism with launch of major leisure park

From Mary Obi

Authorities in Anambra State say a newly completed leisure complex in the state capital marks a notable step in efforts to expand tourism and drive economic growth in southeastern Nigeria.
The facility, Solution Fun City, spans about 12.7 hectares and is described by officials as the largest combined amusement and water park in the region. It was developed under Governor Chukwuma Soludo and commissioned on May 8, 2025 by President Bola Tinubu.

State officials say the project is designed to stimulate activity across multiple sectors, including hospitality, transportation, retail and entertainment, as part of a broader push to diversify the local economy beyond federal allocations.
In a statement released on Thursday, the governor’s media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, said the park had already begun attracting visitors and generating demand within the tourism value chain. He added that tourism offers potential for job creation, poverty reduction and more inclusive economic growth.

The complex includes a range of attractions such as a Ferris wheel, roller coasters, water slides, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, cinemas, indoor arcades, virtual reality facilities and a country club.
Officials also highlighted its pricing structure, with entry fees starting at about 400 naira (roughly $1 at official exchange rates), which they say is intended to make the facility accessible to a broad segment of the population in a country where leisure spending is often constrained by income levels.
The park has been established as an independent company with a professional board, a structure the government says is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability. Revenues are expected to support similar developments in other parts of the state.
Analysts say the project reflects a growing trend among Nigerian states seeking to develop tourism and entertainment infrastructure as alternative sources of revenue. However, they caution that long-term success will depend on maintenance, security and the reliability of supporting infrastructure.

For Anambra, Solution Fun City represents both an economic experiment and a test of whether large-scale public investment in leisure can deliver sustained returns in Africa’s most populous country.
