Opposition Figures Eye ADP as ADC Crisis Deepens Ahead of 2027 Polls

Mounting internal strife within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is forcing key opposition actors to reconsider their political alignment, with growing attention shifting toward the Action Democratic Party (ADP) as a potential coalition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC, once positioned as a rallying point for opposition collaboration, is now grappling with deepening leadership disputes, legal battles, and the looming threat of derecognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The crisis has been further exacerbated by accusations from founding members who allege a “hostile takeover” of the party’s structure.

Amid the uncertainty, multiple opposition stakeholders are said to be quietly exploring alternative political vehicles. The ADP has emerged as a leading option, with its leadership reportedly engaging influential political figures across the country.

In an interview in Abuja, ADP National Chairman, Yusuf Sani, confirmed that consultations are ongoing, describing them as a legitimate exercise of democratic rights. He stressed that the party remains committed to strengthening democratic governance at a critical juncture in Nigeria’s political evolution.

“The Action Democratic Party is prepared to play a constructive role in deepening democratic values and ensuring credible opposition engagement,” Sani stated.

The ADP’s outreach appears to be part of a broader strategy to consolidate opposition forces and counterbalance the growing dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sani disclosed that the party recently initiated contact with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, underscoring the urgency of building a united front. According to him, discussions centered on the need for collaboration among opposition leaders rather than fragmented political pursuits.

Political observers say the unfolding developments reflect a wider realignment within Nigeria’s opposition space, as parties and key figures weigh their strategic options ahead of what is expected to be a highly contested 2027 election cycle.

With the ADC’s internal crisis showing little sign of resolution, the coming months may prove decisive in shaping the structure and strength of Nigeria’s opposition coalition.
