Anambra Deputy Speaker Seeks APS Backing for Federal Seat

The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Pius Chukwuma Okoye, has intensified his push for a seat in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, courting the support of Anambra Patriots (APS), a prominent civic group known for its emphasis on accountability and good governance.
Okoye made his case on Sunday during an interactive session with members of APS at the group’s national secretariat in Awka, where he presented his record in office and outlined his plans for Awka North and South Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The lawmaker, who represents Awka South II Constituency and is serving his second term, said his ambition was driven by a desire to scale up development initiatives beyond his current constituency to cover Awka North and Awka South federal areas.
Highlighting his legislative and constituency achievements, Okoye cited his sponsorship of key bills, including the Anambra Youth Development and Empowerment Commission Bill (2019), as well as measures focused on legislative funding and institutional strengthening. He also referenced motions advocating agricultural innovation and technology-driven farming.
On constituency development, he said his office had implemented community-driven projects across seven communities, including classroom construction, education support schemes, and payment of examination fees for students. He added that over 50 constituents had secured employment opportunities through his facilitation, alongside empowerment programmes involving vehicles, tricycles, and digital skills training.
“I intend to replicate and expand these initiatives at the federal level, where greater resources will allow for broader impact,” Okoye said, stressing that effective representation requires close engagement with constituents. He also challenged rival aspirants to a public debate on their policy proposals.
The engagement formed part of APS’s structured approach to evaluating political aspirants.
Speaking at the event, APS Chairman, Chief Ejiamatu Damian Enekwechi, emphasized that the group is not a conventional political support platform but one committed to assessing candidates based on performance, transparency, and capacity to deliver.
“We stand for good governance and accountability, and we align with individuals who demonstrate these values,” Enekwechi said.
APS Convener, Architect Okey Ezeobi, noted that the group was established to promote credible leadership in Anambra State, adding that its engagements are designed to guide informed decision-making among citizens.

Coordinators of APS across Awka South I, Awka South II, and Awka North constituencies pointed to Okoye’s track record and accessibility as factors that could shape grassroots support, though no formal endorsement was announced.
The event attracted stakeholders and members of APS and featured the distribution of a publication detailing Okoye’s constituency projects, underscoring the group’s central role in shaping political discourse ahead of party primaries.
