Controversy Over Ag VC Nnamdi Azikiwe University: Dr Ojiako calls on Mr President to Rescind Decision

Asks Chairman Council to follow the rules

Another controversy has erupted at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) over the appointment of Professor Umeobi as Acting Vice Chancellor (Ag VC). Dr. Chukwudi Ojiako a university don from the institution has called on the Minister of Education and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revisit the appointment, citing a potential breach of the university's rules.

According to Dr. Ojiako, Professor Umeobi's reappointment would contravene the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Council's rules, specifically the University Miscellaneous Act of 2003, which provides for a one-term tenure for Ag Vice Chancellors and substantive Vice Chancellors respectively.  Dr. Ojiako expressed surprise that the Chairman of the Council, a lawyer, would knowingly breach this rule, potentially opening the university up to unnecessary litigation and crisis.




He said that the previous tenure of Professor Umeobi served as Ag VC for about four months before the appointment of Dr. Odoh as substantive VC. Dr. Ojiako however argues that re-appointing Professor Umeobi for another six months would be against the rules, given her previous tenure.

The controversy raises questions about the university's governance and adherence to its rules and regulations.


Dr. Ojiako therefore called for a revisit of the appointment highlighting the importance of upholding the university's rules and regulations. He said "The University Miscellaneous Act of 2003 provides a clear framework for the tenure of Ag Vice Chancellors and substantive Vice Chancellors, and it is essential that the Council adheres to these rules to maintain stability and avoid unnecessary conflicts."

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University community is eagerly awaiting the outcome of this controversy, which may have far-reaching implications for the institution's governance and academic excellence.

Tension In Uruagu Nnewi As Community Leaders Dare Soludo,Defy Court Order
