TETFund sponsored solar energy solution to be installed in Federal Polytechnic Oko

The effort of the Rector, Dr.Chioma Irene Awuzie, to ensure consistent power supply in the polytechnic has paid off.

Dr.Awuzie on Thursday, May 22, 2025 received in her office, the visiting TETFund committee on Alternative Energy solution for tertiary institutions.

The committee came for assessment of the energy needs of the polytechnic.

The committee was led by Dr. Adeola Eleri.

Recall that Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) recently announced it was introducing a Special Intervention to address the issue of incessant power failure in the nation’s tertiary institutions and subsequently

inaugurated the steering committee to work out alternative Energy solution initiative to tertiary Institutions.

The initiative is part of the TETFund’s commitment to support government efforts to have steady power supply in tertiary institutions across the country .

The federal government had earlier disclosed plans to provide power supply to tertiary institutions through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

The REA aims to provide solar hybrid power plants to some federal tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals . This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to increase electricity access to underserved Nigerians and Federal Polytechnic Oko was among the Federal tertiary institutions selected for the intervention.

The TETFund team leader, Dr. Adeola, thanked the rector and management team for the warm reception and explained that the two-day energy assessment in the institution will enable her team ascertain the available space for the solar hybrid power plant project, the institution's carrying capacity in terms of equipment in various departments and respective energy consumption.

In her response, Dr. Awuzie, who revealed she had earlier written proposals for this intervention thanked Mr. President, Bola Almed Tinubu, and the Executive Secretary, TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, for approving the alternative energy solution for Federal Polytechnic, Oko. She described power supply as sine-qua-non for effective teaching and learning in tertiary institutions.

She disclosed that Federal Polytechnic, Oko, spends heavily on diesel every month. This she said has hampered seriously on the capacity of the Polytechnic to maintain regular power supply.

She affirmed that installation of the solar energy will guarantee steady power supply and assured the team of available space for the installation.

The Deputy Rector, Academic, Dr. Nkiruka Akabuike, in a vote of thanks, highlighted some challenges encountered while running a technology based institution like Federal Polytechnic, Oko in darkness, thanking TETFund for the initiative.
