United Elders Council Worldwide Pays Solidarity Visit to Nnamdi Kanu, Demands For His Immediate and Unconditional Release

The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has renewed its call for the unconditional and immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his detained comrades during a high-level solidarity visit to the embattled IPOB leader at his Abuja detention facility.

A seven-man delegation of the UNIEC National Advisory Council, led by His Lordship, Justice Alpha Ikpeama (rtd.), Director-General of UNIEC Worldwide, met with Mazi Kanu on Thursday, July 18, 2025, as part of the Council’s continued efforts to foster justice, peace, and national reconciliation.

The visit, which was unanimously ratified at the UNIEC Worldwide plenary session on July 5, 2025, in Enugu, marks a significant step in the Council’s long-standing advocacy for lawful redress and human rights protections in Nigeria.


UNIEC’s renewed appeal follows a long list of distinguished voices from across Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, including respected non-Igbo and Igbo leaders such as Chief Edwin Clark, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and the late statesmen Mbazulike Amaechi, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, and Prof. George Obiozor, all of whom passionately advocated for Kanu’s release during their lifetimes.

Despite multiple court rulings in both Nigeria and Kenya affirming Mazi Kanu’s unlawful detention and ordering his release, the federal government has remained unyielding. Legal observers and international human rights groups have condemned the extraordinary rendition of Mazi Kanu from Kenya in 2021, a move executed without the express approval of Kenyan authorities and in clear breach of international legal standards and bilateral treaties.

The Council warned that the continued detention of Mazi Kanu—now stretching beyond four years—undermines the rule of law, erodes public confidence in the judiciary, and threatens the fragile peace and economic stability in the Southeast and beyond.


In its official statement, UNIEC Worldwide made an earnest appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to demonstrate statesmanship by ordering the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in line with judicial pronouncements and international legal obligations.

“This is not just a matter of law—it is a matter of legacy,” the Council declared.
“Just as the kola nut is treasured by those who understand its value, so will this just act of leadership be remembered by generations of Nigerians seeking peace, healing, and justice.”

UNIEC Worldwide reiterated its unwavering stance. That Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must be released now. They emphasised that delay in obeying court orders only prolongs a crisis that can be peacefully resolved through political will and moral courage.
