44 Federal Lawmakers Write Tinubu, Demand Release of Nnamdi Kanu


…Seek Political Solution to Southeast Challenges

A coalition of 44 serving members of the House of Representatives has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and initiate a political solution to the escalating security and socio-political challenges in the Southeast.

The lawmakers, drawn from various geopolitical zones across the country, made the appeal in a jointly signed two-page letter addressed to the President. They urged President Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to exercise his constitutional powers by discontinuing Kanu’s prosecution and paving the way for a broad-based dialogue.

The group, operating under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers for National Unity and Stability, was led by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere. Other signatories to the letter include Hon. Obi Aguocha, Hon. Murphy Osaro, Hon. Peter Akpanke, Hon. Mudashiru Lukman, Hon. Paul Nnamechi, Hon. Sunday Cyriacus, Hon. Obed Shehu, Hon. Dominic Okafor, Hon. Emmanuel Ugwu, Hon. Daniel Asama Ago, Hon. Chike John Okafor and Hon. Adam Ogene Ogbaru, among others.

In the letter, the lawmakers said their position was informed by the need for national reconciliation, noting previous instances where the Federal Government engaged with various militant and agitating groups across the country. They also referenced multiple domestic and international court rulings in favour of Kanu, as well as rising public demand for his release.

Part of the letter reads:
“Driven by the urgent need for national healing and unity, and having noted the insecurity that has engulfed the Southeast since 2015 and worsened significantly from 2021, we respectfully request Mr. President to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue the prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We further urge that, following such discontinuance, the Presidency convene an inclusive political dialogue aimed at resolving the underlying issues in a just and sustainable manner.”

The lawmakers expressed confidence that Kanu’s release and the commencement of a genuine political process would contribute significantly to peace-building efforts in the region.

They concluded by expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for considering their request and reaffirmed their respect for his office.
