One Killed, One Injured in Nteje–Awka Road Crash — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has confirmed the death of one person and the injury of another in a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Wednesday along the Nteje–Awka Road, near Igbariam Junction.

According to a report issued by the FRSC Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Margaret B. Onabe, the crash occurred at about 2:40 p.m, and the Nteje Unit Command received the distress call five minutes later, while the rescue team arrived at the scene promptly at 2:50 p.m.

She said that the accident involved two commercial vehicles: a red Sino trailer belonging to Coca-Cola and an ash-coloured Daihatsu Hijet minibus owned by ASTMA. Both drivers were unidentified at the time of the report.

Four male occupants were involved in the crash. One person died on the spot, one sustained injuries and was given immediate first aid before being evacuated to hospital, while two others escaped unhurt.

The FRSC attributed the cause of the accident to loss of control by the trailer driver. Eyewitnesses told officials that the ASTMA bus had stopped to intervene in a roadside parking issue when the Coca-Cola trailer attempted to maneuver past but lost control. The truck’s tyre reportedly caught the minibus, dragging it into a gutter and trapping it beneath the trailer.

The Sector Commander of FRSC Anambra State, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, who visited the crash site alongside the Corridor 5 Commander and the Nteje Unit Commander, commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victim.

“We deeply regret this tragic loss and commend the swift response of our officers. This incident underscores the urgent need for all drivers to observe speed limits, avoid reckless maneuvers, and maintain full control of their vehicles at all times,” she said.

The FRSC rescue team successfully extricated the trapped occupants. The injured victim was taken to Chira Hospital, Awkuzu, for emergency care, while the deceased was deposited at Jerusalem Hospital, Nteje. An RCC crane was deployed to lift the trailer and clear the wreckage, enabling the restoration of traffic flow.

The Anambra State Command, however, reiterated its commitment to saving lives, enforcing traffic regulations, and intensifying public education to prevent avoidable road crashes across the state.
