Ohanaeze Youth Wing Disowns ‘Impostor’, Condemns Attacks on Igbo Leaders

The youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has issued a strong warning over what it described as “sponsored attacks” against prominent Igbo leaders, dismissing recent claims made by Igboayaka Igboayaka as baseless and misleading.

Igboayaka, who purportedly identified himself as President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, had declared several former South-East governors persona non grata for allegedly endorsing President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those he criticised were David Umahi, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Sullivan Chime, Chris Ngige, and Okezie Ikpeazu, accusing them of political betrayal.

However, reacting in a statement issued on Monday, the National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Okwu Nnabuike, urged the public to disregard the remarks, describing Igboayaka as “an impostor” engaging in political mischief.

Okwu emphasised that no individual or group has the authority to declare others persona non grata over their political choices, noting that support for any candidate ahead of the 2027 elections remains a fundamental democratic right.

“It is within the rights of former governors and indeed any Nigerian to support candidates of their choice,” he said. “The era of attacking and insulting leaders over differing political opinions should be behind us, particularly when such actions are driven by impersonators.”

He further cautioned against what he termed “political rascality,” stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated in the South-East as the 2027 elections approach.

According to him, political support should be built on persuasion rather than coercion or public disparagement, adding that similar endorsements across other regions have not attracted such hostility.

Okwu also warned individuals allegedly sponsoring the controversial statements to desist, hinting that the group may expose those behind the actions if they persist.

He defended the integrity of the affected leaders, describing them as individuals who have served their respective states with distinction and should not be subjected to unwarranted attacks.

“It is unacceptable to deride respected leaders who have contributed significantly to governance and development in their states,” he added. “We will not stand by and allow faceless actors to undermine their contributions for political gain.”

The Ohanaeze youth leader concluded by urging restraint, mutual respect, and constructive political engagement among stakeholders in the region.
