Opposition Coalition Reconfigures as Key Blocs Retain Strength Amid Exit Signals

Nigeria’s opposition landscape appears to be entering a new phase of strategic realignment following indications that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may be reconsidering their continued participation in the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding their positions, insiders within the alliance insist that the coalition remains structurally solid and politically viable. The emerging formation is said to be anchored by prominent figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke.

Also central to the coalition’s recalibrated structure is the political bloc historically aligned with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The bloc, known for its grassroots appeal across northern Nigeria, is reportedly being coordinated by former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, alongside key figures such as Babachir David Lawal, Abubakar Malami, and Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Political analysts note that while the potential withdrawal of high-profile actors like Obi and Kwankwaso could reshape the coalition’s outlook, it does not necessarily erode its electoral strength. The remaining blocs are believed to retain extensive political structures, loyal voter bases, and considerable mobilization capacity across key regions of the country.

Observers suggest that the ongoing shift reflects a transition from a broad-based alliance to a more streamlined and strategically aligned power base—one that could prove equally formidable in the evolving political contest.

Attention is now focused on how the coalition will reposition itself ahead of future electoral engagements, particularly in relation to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. With influential stakeholders still firmly within its ranks, the opposition appears poised to remain a significant force.

For now, the signals from within the coalition indicate resilience and determination, setting the stage for what is expected to be an intensely competitive political season.
