The Youth Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Worldwide Diaspora Network, Hon. (Dr.) Abdul-Malik Rabiu Jaafar, has raised concern over the growing wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that the trend poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Jaafar acknowledged that political realignment is a constitutional right but cautioned that the mass and strategic movement of elected officials and political actors into a single ruling party is pushing the country toward a de facto one-party system.
According to him, such a development weakens opposition parties, erodes checks and balances, and undermines the foundations of participatory democracy.
“A vibrant democracy thrives on strong opposition that questions policies, holds government accountable and provides credible alternatives,” the statement read. “What we are witnessing, however, is the systematic weakening of opposition parties, not through superior governance or ideology, but through intimidation, inducement and survival-driven defections.”
Jaafar warned that the continued consolidation of power without effective competition would lead to diminished accountability, poor governance and fewer meaningful choices for citizens at the ballot.
The ADC, he said, remains firmly opposed to what he described as a dangerous drift toward political dominance by a single party. He noted that the party stands for ideology, inclusion and democratic values, with a focus on good governance, youth participation, economic justice and national unity.
The Diaspora youth leader called on Nigerians—particularly young people, professionals, reform-minded politicians and progressives at home and abroad—to resist political complacency and align with the ADC in strengthening democratic opposition through lawful and peaceful means.
“Nigeria must not slide into authoritarianism disguised as political convenience. Democracy must be defended,” he said.
Jaafar described the ADC as a people-driven platform capable of offering credible alternatives and restoring democratic balance in the country.
