ANAMBRA FIRST LADY INTERVENES TO SAVE 13-YEAR-OLD HIV PATIENT IN AWKA

From Mary Obi

A 13-year-old girl battling Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) at Regina Caeli Hospital has received emergency humanitarian aid following a coordinated intervention led by Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor.

The rapid response was triggered after the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) escalated the case, raising urgent alarms over the child’s rapidly deteriorating health.

Multi-Agency Mobilization

Acting on the report, Mrs. Soludo deployed resources through her non-governmental organization, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, to cover the child's treatment, specialized nutrition, and welfare.
A high-level delegation immediately visited the hospital to deliver food supplies, essential medical items, and financial assistance. The coalition included representatives from:

 Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo
 ANSACA

The Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN)

The Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (ASHWAN)

Status Update: Hospital staff report that the patient is already showing early signs of clinical improvement following the combined medical and humanitarian intervention.

Systems and Support
ANSACA Executive Director, Nkem Okeke, stated that the case underscores the critical need for rapid-response mechanisms during health emergencies. He confirmed that long-term psychosocial support and strict medical monitoring have been established to ensure the child's recovery.

"This intervention reflects our broader commitment to protecting vulnerable children," Mrs. Soludo said. "No child should be left without access to essential care and emotional support, particularly in life-threatening conditions."

The Broader Crisis
Health advocates used the incident to call for increased community awareness and earlier reporting of severe cases. Nigeria continues to face a significant HIV burden, and public health officials reiterated that routine testing, early diagnosis, and sustained treatment adherence remain the only viable strategies to prevent advanced complications.
Local authorities confirmed they will continue to track the child's progress as part of a wider effort to strengthen HIV response systems across Anambra State.
