Just In: Nwafor Orizu’s Son Steps Down for Amb Lotanna Ikebunwa Ahead of NDC Primaries in Nnewi Federal Constituency

Barely hours to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries for the Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, the political atmosphere within the constituency witnessed a dramatic twist as Prince Africa Afordoo Adimnchezo Nwafor-Orizu, son of Nigeria’s first Senate President Dr. Abyssinia Akweke Nwafor Orizu, officially stepped down from the race in support of Amb. Lotanna Ikebunwa Fidelis.

In a statement personally signed and released to party members and supporters under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Prince Africa Afordoo Adimnchezo Nwafor-Orizu said his decision was borne out of the need to promote unity within the constituency, strengthen the party’s chances in the forthcoming elections, and support a younger generation of leadership capable of energising the political base of the party and the Federal constituency as well.

According to him, after “due observation” of all aspirants contesting for the Nnewi Federal Constituency ticket, I voluntarily resolved to collapse my political structure in support of Amb. Lotanna Ikebunwa Fidelis, whom he described as “a young energetic brother” with the capacity to move the constituency forward.

The statement read in part: “I willingly decided to step down for my brother from my constituency, Ikebunwa Lotanna Fidelis. Hence, I urge all my supporters from this constituency, all party faithful, and especially the entire Nnewi electorate and my supporters in Ekwusigo and Nnewi South to support my brother Ikebunwa Lotanna in today’s NDC party primaries.”

He further noted that his withdrawal from the race was in the overall interest of the party and the unity of Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency.

The endorsement is widely seen as politically significant given the enduring influence and historical legacy of the Nwafor-Orizu political family within Anambra politics and across the old Eastern Region. Analysts believe the support of Prince Nwafor-Orizu may further consolidate Lotanna Ikebunwa’s standing among undecided members of the party participating in the direct primary process.
