As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) concluded its party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, Hon. Uchenna Charles Okafor of Awkuzu has emerged as the party’s candidate for the Oyi/Ayamelum Federal House of Representatives seat.
The primary election, which took place at Nteje the Local Government Headquarters, pulled (NDC) Party faithful across all wards in the constituency from communities of Nteje, Ogbunike, Nkwelle Ezunaka, Umunya, Awkuzu, across all the communities in Ayamelum. The party recorded what party officials described as massive participation by party members.
Hon. Okafor secured a landslide victory with 1,100 votes, defeating his closest rival, Hon. Vincent Ofumelu 64 votes, Akwaeze who polled 624 votes, Rapjoe 89votes.
Declaring the results, the representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Election Party Monitoring, officially announced Hon. Uchenna Okafor as the winner of the primaries conducted at Oyi LGA for the 2027 House of Representatives election in Oyi /Ayamelum Federal Constituency.
In his remarks after his declaration, Hon. Okafor expressed gratitude to the people for their overwhelming support.
“It is a resounding victory and a confirmation of my campaign slogan ‘To whom much is given much is expected " Across Oyi /Ayamelum .’ I thank my people for voting massively for me, standing by me, and believing in our vision,” he said.
He described the victory as a mandate for development, emphasizing that the people had rejected money politics in favor of purposeful leadership.
“This victory is for the people as a New Nigeria is Possible; it is a victory for improved agriculture, clean water, accessible roads, sustainable youth business grants, and socio-economic development,” Okafor stated.
The NDC candidate further assured party supporters that the momentum from the primaries would be carried into the 2027 general election.
“The ticket is sealed, our mandate is legitimate, and our vision is clear. We are taking this momentum straight to the general election to align Oyi/Ayamelum with the national drive for a New Nigeria that is possible,” he added.
We have conducted a primary that stands as a shining example of transparency, zero impunity, and grassroots democracy,” he said.
Speaking on voter turnout, Okafor noted that the large participation recorded during the primaries showed that the people of Oyi/Ayamelum were determined to change the status quo.
“With the massive turnout witnessed today, there is no gainsaying that the people are ready for change. I assure you that come 2027, there will be a successful election.and I will emerge victorious,” he concluded.
