CTA Urges INEC, Security Agencies, Politicians to Uphold Transparency Ahead of Anambra Governorship Poll

As Anambra State heads to the polls tomorrow, Saturday, November 8, 2025, the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has called on all stakeholders including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, and voters to ensure a credible, peaceful, and transparent governorship election.

Speaking at a pre-election briefing held at Hilton Leisure Hotel, Awka, on Friday, the Executive Director of CTA, Faith Nwadishi ably represented by
Professor Alex Asigbo of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University said the organization remains committed to promoting electoral transparency and accountability through its real-time observation of the election process.

According to the CTA, technological innovations introduced into Nigeria’s electoral system in recent years have raised citizens’ confidence and encouraged broader participation, particularly among the youth. The group said this optimism must be sustained through credible conduct by election managers and other key actors.

“The people of Anambra have high expectations that this election will consolidate the gains made in recent electoral reforms,” the statement read. “INEC and all stakeholders must ensure that every vote counts and that the process remains free, fair, and credible.”


The Centre announced that it will deploy 50 trained election observers across Anambra’s 21 local government areas. The observers, it said, have been trained in line with INEC’s guidelines and will send in real-time reports to the CTA Situation Room in Awka.

The organization, which has been accredited by INEC as a domestic observer group, also recalled that it recently implemented a Voter Education and Enlightenment Programme in Orumba South Local Government Area between September 15 and 30, in collaboration with the Koyenum Immalah Foundation (KIF).
The project aimed at sensitizing voters on their rights, discouraging electoral malpractices, and promoting peaceful participation.


CTA urged INEC to ensure that all logistical arrangements for the election are flawless, warning against the perennial challenges that often mar the timely deployment of personnel and materials.

“INEC must ensure that all election materials and officials are mobilized promptly. The Electoral Officers and ad-hoc staff must live above board, as integrity should remain the hallmark of the Commission’s operations,” the group stated.

The CTA also commended INEC for sanctioning errant officials in the past but called for continued disciplinary action against any staff found culpable of misconduct.


While commending the relative peace during the campaign period, the CTA raised concerns about potential flashpoints in Orumba South, Ihiala, and Ogbaru, urging security agencies to remain vigilant.

It called for improved synergy among security formations to guarantee the safety of voters, INEC staff, and election materials before, during, and after the polls.


The advocacy group encouraged eligible voters to come out en masse to exercise their franchise peacefully, reminding them that the gubernatorial election offers a vital opportunity to shape governance at the grassroots.

“Voters must resist the temptation of vote trading or selling their votes. They should conduct themselves peacefully and ensure that their votes truly count,” CTA emphasized.


The group warned against the spread of fake news and inflammatory content, especially on social media platforms, urging journalists and media houses to uphold neutrality and professionalism in their coverage.

“The mainstream media must not reinforce unverified information circulated online. Responsible reporting is key to preventing tension and ensuring a peaceful election,” the statement added.


The CTA strongly condemned vote buying and the monetization of the electoral process, noting that such acts undermine democracy.

It called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), commercial banks, and anti-graft agencies to monitor illicit financial transactions that may be used to influence the outcome of the polls.

The Centre also appealed to candidates and their supporters to avoid hate speech, voter intimidation, and other acts capable of breaching the peace.

“We remind politicians of the Peace Accord they voluntarily signed. They must rein in their supporters, respect opposing candidates, and prioritize the unity of Anambra State above personal ambitions,” the group warned.


In conclusion, the CTA reaffirmed its confidence in INEC’s ability to deliver a free, fair, credible, and conclusive election, while insisting on the continued use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which it described as a “game changer” in the electoral process.

“We urge Ndi Anambra to come out and vote for candidates of their choice peacefully. The strength of our democracy lies in the active participation of the people,” CTA concluded.
