Atiku Abubakar Alleges Plot to Use Judiciary Against ADC, Condemns Treatment of Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai

Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is plotting to deploy the judiciary to weaken the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging opposition figures to remain vigilant against what he described as anti-democratic manoeuvres.

Atiku made the remarks on Thursday night during a visit to the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, following reports of an attempted arrest at the airport.

Earlier on Thursday, Muyiwa Adekeye, media aide to El-Rufai, alleged that security operatives attempted to arrest the former governor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon his return from Cairo, Egypt.

In a post on X, Adekeye claimed that operatives approached El-Rufai shortly after he disembarked from his flight on Wednesday but that he declined to accompany them in the absence of a formal invitation.

“Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir El-Rufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo,” Adekeye wrote, adding that the operatives allegedly seized the former governor’s international passport from an aide.

As of press time, there was no official statement from security agencies regarding the allegation.

Speaking during the visit, Atiku said he had received what he described as “credible information” suggesting plans to undermine the ADC through judicial means.

“Just as they undermined and sabotaged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), there are also efforts and plans to undermine the ADC by using the judiciary again,” he said.

He called on opposition leaders and supporters to remain alert and resist any attempt to weaken democratic institutions.

“This is very, very credible information. We must all unite and stand up to these anti-democratic forces and ensure that the judiciary is not used to undermine the ADC, just as it has been used to destroy the PDP,” Atiku added.


The former vice-president also condemned what he termed an attempt to embarrass El-Rufai, stating that such actions reflect on the broader political class.

“By embarrassing you, they are embarrassing the entire political class. We condemn it in totality and we will stand by you,” he said.

In his response, El-Rufai thanked Atiku for the visit and expression of solidarity, describing the airport incident as “most unfortunate, totally unnecessary, and probably criminal as well.”

“You have always shown concern for my personal welfare and for that of our friends and associates. This visit further reinforces that concern, for which I am grateful,” he said.

The development adds a new dimension to the growing tensions within the opposition space, as political realignments continue ahead of the next electoral cycle.
