Anambra Youths Rally in Support of Agunaechemba, Reject Calls for Disbandment

The youth wing of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC) on Saturday staged a solidarity rally in Awka, declaring their support for the continuation of the Agunaechemba and Udo Ga-Achi security operatives. They cautioned politicians against politicising insecurity ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

The rally followed a protest the previous day, led by the Young Progressive Party (YPP) governorship candidate, Sir Paul Chukwuma, who demanded the disbandment of Agunaechemba and the Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) over alleged misconduct by some members.

But youths from all 179 communities in Anambra State, carrying placards with solidarity messages, marched through major streets of Awka to the new Government House in support of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his security initiatives.

Speaking at the event, ASTUC Youth President, Hon. Ken Okoli, condemned the viral video showing eight Agunaechemba operatives assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ms. Jennifer Elohor. He urged the government to ensure full prosecution of those involved.

Okoli, however, commended the swift action of the state government in dismissing the errant officers and handing them over to the police. He assured that youths across Anambra’s 179 communities would continue to monitor security operatives to ensure professionalism.

He warned that disbanding Agunaechemba would create a vacuum in grassroots security and embolden opposition politicians to exploit insecurity for electoral gain.

“We can’t allow Agunaechemba and Udo Ga-Achi to be scrapped because of the mistakes of a few members,” Okoli said. “The Homeland Security Law empowers them to address security challenges. Those who erred should be punished, but the outfit must continue. We are solidly behind Governor Soludo’s re-election and his security reforms.”

Receiving the protesters on behalf of Governor Soludo, the Chief of Staff, Sir Ernest Ezeajughi, thanked the youths for their show of confidence in the administration.

He noted that the government had recorded significant achievements in security and other sectors, urging stakeholders to support efforts to consolidate peace rather than undermine them.

“The governor is doing very well, especially in security. We have transformed various sectors,” Ezeajughi said. “We must resist attempts to politicise security. Instead, let us work together to make Anambra safe and prosperous.”
