Atiku Declares for 2027 Presidential Election, Says Nigeria Must Be Rescued

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing speculations that he might step aside from the race.

Atiku made his position known through his long-time associate and spokesperson during the 2023 elections, Tunde Olusunle, who disclosed the remarks to ThisDay on Sunday night.

According to Olusunle, the former Vice President is determined to rescue Nigeria from what he described as “intensive care” under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Atiku, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—a coalition that has drawn several prominent politicians in recent months.

He criticised what he termed “mega-scale thievery, loss of values, and lack of accountability” in government, vowing that the ADC would mobilise Nigerians to upstage the ruling establishment in 2027.

“I will be offering myself to lead the reclamation and reconstruction of our traumatised homeland,” Olusunle quoted him as saying after a private meeting.

The former Vice President also defended the ADC’s modest performance in recent by-elections, stressing that the coalition was still in its early stages but remains a “potent force” capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political future.

Atiku’s latest declaration comes amid speculation over his political future. Over the weekend, Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, who represented him at a defection event in Lagos, suggested that Atiku was more focused on nation-building than contesting for power “at all costs.”

However, Atiku quickly distanced himself from those remarks. Speaking from his holiday residence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he clarified that the comments were unauthorised.

“When people stand in for me at events, we preview my thoughts on the subject. In this particular instance, there was no engagement with me to distill my thoughts. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me,” Atiku explained.

Reaffirming his ambition, he declared:

“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned. The degeneration in our country—the poverty, the pain, the anguish—is unacceptable.”

Atiku’s declaration is expected to reignite political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the ADC positions itself as a major challenger to the ruling party.
