FRSC Anambra Confirms Six Dead, Several Injured in Fatal Crash on Awka–Onitsha Road

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra State Command has confirmed six fatalities following a tragic road traffic crash that occurred in the early hours of Friday, November 28, 2025, along the Awka–Onitsha Road, at the Nawfia axis near Enugu Agidi Junction.

According to SRC Margaret B. Onabe, the Sector Public Education Officer of FRSC RS5.3 Awka Unit, the crash happened at about 6:20 a.m., involving two vehicles: a yellow-and-black tipper truck with registration number FGG 21XV and a red 608 bus marked XQ 398 AA.

A total of 32 persons were involved in the collision—9 male adults and 23 female adults. Six persons, comprising two men and four women, lost their lives, while five female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries. The remaining 21 passengers were rescued unhurt.

All victims were immediately taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths.

An eyewitness, who was among the passengers in the bus, disclosed that the occupants were returning from a burial ceremony organized by the Catholic Women Organization (CWO) in Ebonyi State. She alleged that the bus driver engaged in repeated dangerous overtaking in an attempt to make up for lost time, a pattern of reckless driving that ultimately led to the head-on collision with the tipper truck.

Speaking on the incident, the Anambra State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, described the crash as a painful and avoidable tragedy.

“This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and urge all motorists to respect traffic laws, avoid aggressive overtaking, and prioritize safety for all road users.”

She further reassured the public of the Corps’ continued commitment to traffic law enforcement, safety education, and swift emergency response across the state.

Traffic flow along the route has since been fully restored after the obstruction caused by the crash was cleared.
