The Hausa community in Nnewi, Nnewi North local government area of Anambra State, has called on the state government to grant them official recognition and protection to foster harmonious coexistence with the host community. This appeal was made by the leader of the Hausa community, Alhaji Salihu Suleiman, during his inauguration as Sarkin Hausawa Nnewi and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Anambra South senatorial district.
Alhaji Suleiman also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish a separate polling unit for the Hausa community in Ama Hausa area of Nnewi. He stated that approximately 3,000 Hausa residents in the area lack a permanent polling unit, hindering their ability to exercise their voting rights. "Eighty-five percent of Northerners vote in Anambra State, but majority of our people are not registered in one area," he noted.
The new monarch appealed to the government to honor promises made to the Hausa community during elections and provide them with the recognition and cooperation they deserve. He emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence between the Hausa people and their hosts.
Alhaji Suleiman outlined his role as a bridge between the Hausa community, the government, and the people of Anambra State. He pledged to ensure that his people are law-abiding and maintain a good relationship with their hosts.
The monarch however expressed gratitude to Governor Charles Soludo for his efforts in tackling insecurity and promoting development in Anambra State. He called on relevant authorities to work together to achieve mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence between the Hausa community and their hosts.
