Police Crack Down on Exploitation of Sick Persons in Anambra

A joint security team comprising police officers from Oba Divisional Police Headquarters and Anambra Vigilante Operatives has arrested six suspects accused of hiring sick individuals to beg for alms in Oba. The suspects, aged between 27 and 38 years, were apprehended on April 16, 2025, at an uncompleted building in Isu village.


The arrested suspects include, Doris Basil, 28 years old, female, Peter Ezedike, 38 years old, male, Susan Monday, 27 years old, female, Ogechi Okoro, 27 years old, female, Solomon Sunday, 29 years old, malez Kenneth Achi, 29 years old, male

The operatives recovered six mobile phones and ₦82,400 in cash. Four ill persons suffering from brain tumors, breast cancer, and other terminal sicknesses were taken into safe custody, provided with first aid, and arrangements made for their medical treatment and safe return to their homes.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed concern over the moral decay of individuals exploiting sick persons for financial gain. He noted that Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act deals with obtaining property by false pretense, a felony carrying a potential penalty of three years imprisonment. The police commissioner has directed the immediate interrogation of the relatives of the sick persons to determine their involvement. 

The suspects will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation. This operation is part of the Anambra State Police Command's efforts under Operation Udo Ga Chi, aimed at combating violent crimes and ensuring a safer environment for residents.
