Rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko Seeks Collaboration with SSAUTHRIAI and Campus Unions

— Vows to Uphold Staff Welfare and Foster Industrial Harmony

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, has appealed to members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI) and other staff unions in the institution to support her administration through constructive engagement rather than actions that could destabilize the campus.

Dr. Awuzie made the call on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, during a courtesy visit by members of SSAUTHRIAI, Federal Polytechnic Oko branch, to her office.

Addressing the delegation, the Rector reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to the welfare and protection of all staff and students, stating that the institution under her leadership has zero tolerance for victimisation.

"This administration is union-friendly. We don’t need industrial action when issues can be resolved through dialogue. If there are matters requiring management's attention, we encourage the unions to bring them forward so that we can address them collaboratively," she said.

Dr. Awuzie urged for a harmonious working relationship between the unions and the school’s management, adding, “No union will be denied its rights. Let us work together as one team. United we stand, but divided we fall.”

She also pledged to consider the union’s requests and ensure they receive fair attention from the management.

Earlier in his remarks, the newly elected Chairman of SSAUTHRIAI, Comrade Godson Nzekwe, said the purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the new union leadership and congratulate Dr. Awuzie on her appointment as Rector.

He also used the opportunity to present a few requests, including the provision of a union vehicle and a permanent site for the construction of a union secretariat.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism about a more collaborative and progressive working relationship.
